Books - PhotoHunt

read

Some months ago, the theme for the City Daily photoblogs was "Books." I shared the kids' books there because our collection (hubby's and mine) are not here. :D Today, let me show you my little boy (3 yrs old) who loves browsing the dictionary. lol. Everytime I do my homeworks, he would be beside me shifting pages after pages while saying 'hausaufgabe' (homework) and would point on some words as if trying to read them. He is also fond of other picture books and tries to identify the colors and what is pictured there (mostly animals and insects). It is still some more years before he could read but I am glad that he has a fondness for books as I do.

--------

Thumbs up by the way to Johannes Gutenberg for inventing the first  printing press! We now have books to read.... :D

libro

Libro, is the Spanish word for book and has also been more often used in the Philippines rather than the tagalog word 'aklat'. Here in Vienna, Libro is one of the biggest school, office supplies and bookstore. My daughter loves visiting Libro and I am biased too because her first magazine appearance was with them.

Little Musicians

For me, music is something that brings out the best in a person. Singing gives one confidence and so does playing an instrument, that was why I enrolled my daughter in her kindergarten's child music education for flute when she was 4.

She played well and can read notes already but had to stop because the school where she went to does not offer this particular program. I plan tp enrol all 3 kids in a music school and I was ecstatic to find out that there are a number of
child music class near our place. Vienna, just like Japan emphasizes on children's talent development , the famous composers Mozart and Strauß learned and developed their music here after all. There are various Music centers and schools or individuals offering music lessons which the children can attend to after school as extra curricular activities.

My daughter would take flute lessons again, my older son said he wants to learn the guitar and it's convenient too since hubby bought him a guitar years ago while I am not sure for my 3 year-old yet. I am considering to enroll him for voice lessons since he loves singing anyway even with words that are not yet recognizable :D . It is also amazing that these schools have a special baby music classes and much awesome is how the smaller kids learn fast from it.

Book repairs

There have been many times that my book gave up on me, the batteries stopped charging up, the OS failed and there was one time that the little boy put some coins in the dvd player and some more. It was a good thing that we still have the repair guarantee then. But after the guarantee expired,  it was different.  At one time, we had to buy the keyboard from Mac and it costs 300 euros so we didn't. Hubby opted  the repairs himself. He would look for parts online and do the repairs soon.

Well, nowadays computer repair service are much easier that it was years ago...I remember I had to bring the pc at a repair shop and picking it up afterwards. With PowerbookMedic, repairs and upgrades are easily done, yur book can be shipped and returned to you just like new!

Alam mo ba? / Did you Know? - Litratong Pinoy

Ayon sa kanya nooong sila ay nasa Vienna, Rizal "encountered the figure of a temptress in the form of a Viennese woman, of the family of the Camellias or hetaeras of extraordinary beauty and irresistible attraction."

memorial

There's a facetious speculation circulating the cyberspace pointing Dr. Jose Rizal as the father of der Führer Adolf Hitler. The rumor spurred from the hero's 3 day-visit in Vienna on May 1887. Though Hitler was born in 1889, there were lots of weaved  stories pointing that it was not the correct date. The theory is further flamed up by the name of Hitler's mother, Klara, coincidentally a character in Noli.

Rizal was accompanied by Dr. Maximo Viola, the financier of Noli, and stayed at Hotel Metropole, Morzinplatz, at the heart of the city with a view of the Danube Canal. During the war, the building was hit by a bomb and subsequently destroyed to eliminate memories of prisoners' death as it was used as Gestapo's headquarters. To this day, there stood a memorial stone for the victims. Walk just a few steps to the nearest building, there is installed a marker dedicated to Rizal as a gesture of the Philippine Embassy in Austria to commemorate the hero's 134th birth anniversary in 1995.

It's more than just a box for letters!

Through the years, the mailbox through which mail is delivered has evolved from any of the following designs:

-a slot in a wall or door
-a box attached directly to the house
-a box mounted at or near the street
-a centralised unit consisting of many individual mailboxes for an entire building or neighbourhood

Mailboxes could appear different from all over the world and depends on the need of users. At Mailboxixchange, consumers are given a wide variety of mailboxes to choose from. There are single-unit mailbox & post packages, perfect for hiomes with gardens. There are wall mount mailboxes for those who owns houses that have entrances directly from the street. Commercial mailboxes for business firms or column mailboxes for extra protection against rain and other harsh weather elements.

My personal choice would be the Mayne Granite Signature Plus mailbox (left photo). The planter is definitely a bonus and a beautiful addition to the garden for a plant lover like me. It also has a newspaper holder to boast. With 15 years warranty, this mailbox is just perfect! Not to mention free of shipping too!

Rating webhosts

When it comes to webhosting there are lots of services being offered that comes in a package.

Nowadays, free hosting is a popular trend, take this blog for example, I learned basic HTML using this as a platform, posting is easy since literally everything is provided. If you need something that is simple or when you plan to perhaps practice your blogging skills then free hosting is for you. On the other hand, dedicated hosting is better alternative for businesses and webmasters. Having your own domain hosted under a single server makes everything on your page load faster. If you have a hosting but doesn't use up much space then you can resell these spaces as shared hosting. The downside though is that when your renters do something illegal it is more likely that you will be affected.

With the help of website ratings and reviews, consumers are able to identify and opt for services that fit their needs. The site provides a list of popular website hosts under various categories. Some of them includes best budget hosting, best blog hosting and best dedicated hosting. If your looking for a web host, click the link and compare prices and services offered by different hosting companies.

Painted (Repost) - Photo Hunt

daniel paints

(June 08)

Little boy painted his first work of art and I was so excited about it, I rolled up the painting the kindergarten tantes gave me and took it home. I showed hubby our youngest son's first attempt on Monet (hehe) but ended up forgetting to take a shot. Now I completely forgot to and thank them kindergarten tantes, they also have photos of the little boy doing his painting in action.

dani paints2

Its given, he likes playing with water a lot so painting for him is double the fun as he gets to play with colors too! And yes, my little boy is a left- handed as most famous artists were, the list goes from Albrecht Dürer, Paul Klee, Leonardo da Vinci, Raphael and more!

Here's a mom hoping for his little boy to follow their leads! =D

alexie painting

Painting or drawing can get messy sometimes, especially for younger tots. Our walls at home would once in a while have markers on them, handprints and taped papers with scribbles. Messy as it may be, kids should not be stopped doing so. (I call them the Painted walls.)

Painting at an early age gives children the capability to recognize colors as they choose what colors to paint with. They see how combining the primary colors (red, blue, and yellow) create other colors.

Painting also becomes an outlet for kids to express their emotions that they can not easily speak out. Stroking, or simlply having to hold the brush practices their motoring skills...they learn how to do darker tones or paint lightly in the process.

Its good to have coloring books but blank papers give them more space for creativity. Who knows, your kid will someday join the ranks of Van Gogh or Monet when honed early. =)

Plumbers

A plumber back in the old days is a person with expertise in working with lead (latin; plumbus). Then they were known as a Plumbarius, later on shortened to plumber until to this day. Nowadays a plumber is a tradesperson who specialises in installing and maintaining systems or piping used for potable (drinking) water, sewage or drainage. Years of training or experience are needed to become a skilled plumber. Some require that plumbers be licensed. So unlike Super Mario it is not just a game.

A Master Plumber is someone who has demonstrated the mastery of the trade of plumbing. The Master Plumber may have worked in a single area or multiple areas of the plumbing trade. Plumbing codes are strict, and need for quality plumbing work is high since health and safety problems are associated with poor water supply and sewage removal. Plumbers need to be accurate when doing their jobs.

You might think that repairing your dipping faucet or your lose pipe would save the problem instead and might make the problem worse and later on cost more for repairs. At Columbus Plumbing, you get get a fast reponse with an assured quality of work. Columbus plumbing's website advised for workers compensation insurance to be in place and other tips on how to make your plumbing service hiring a successful one.

Chicken coop plans

When I was a child, my parents own a small poultry farm at home. They built chicken coops and see to it that its clean. Just like others, my parents kept a small flock of chickens to provide us with eggs and meat.

When I entered highschool, the "farm" that we used to have, broke down...the coops were made of bamboo so it wasn't that strong of a wood afterall. Back then coops weren't as easily accessible like how it is nowadays. Coops and other materials related to raising chickens can now be planned, ordered and are delivered directly at your doorstep. Now, it is also possible to plan your own coops! Even chicken houses can be attractive!

Web designers

There's been much debate on this, and I see lots of bloggers changing their layouts optimizing it for search engines. The little home I have is no exception. If you have noticed I have changed layouts more than 3 times this year, I wanted a simple, clean layout that is easy to navigate but the husband, a web designer, doesn't approve of this.

However, being the busy bee that he is, he can't sit on this and make a decent one. He did gave me a tip: black background with white fonts is easier to read. His programmer friend seemed to disagree though; "white background, black fonts!" was the strict answer.Aesthetic or Traffic? Well, why not both? *sigh* I noticed that the page loads slower but I'm anyway sticking to this layout for now...unless I see another one that interests me more. Well, there are lots of websites and web designers sites that help noobs like me understand these things. N30 web design's newly revamp site displays both easy navigation with their clickable tabs and clean but effective layout, no overpowering images or crazy buttons to confuse visitors. Try and see their sample works that are targeted to each business or personal need.

Supercharge your car

After watching the anime series Initial-D, hubby became a big fan of drifting, car races , F1 and anything related to cars. Long before though, he loves tinkering with his car, even though it was an older model. I don't technically know the specifications of cars but like hubby I learned much about the anime.

I once heard him said something about a supercharger, any device that pressurizes the air intake to above atmospheric pressure making cars speedy. Then he showed me a website of superchargers that offers cheaper products, I am able to understand more too. Superchargerpros.com allow speed junkies and racecar designers in searching for ways to boost a car's power. As of now, I do not have plans of buying a supercharger but I marked the page just in case.

Fleas

Back when I was a young kid we always had a dog in our yard, a cat wandering in the house, lovebirds at the garage and fishes in the kitchen. That's how much we like having pets...inevitably the pets' pests come with them too. I can only remember that we used to wash up the garage and dust the home a lot since there are no known pest cleaners or other cat flea control than that.

VoIP over PSTN

In this age where technology has reached and produced a lot of convenience among distances, VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol)is one of those. Defined as a family of transmission technologies for delivery of voice communications over IP networks such as the Internet rather than the old fashion way, through public switched telephone network (PSTN).

Xpander Communications is one of the leading provider of VOIP Phone Systems and solutions for businesses. In fact, the company has been named Provider of the Month for March of 2009 on myvoipprovider.com, a free online resource which allows you to find the best Voice over IP service. The service also allows you to compare, review and rank almost all known VoIP service providers which you can differentiate through their call rates, flat rates or monthly packages.

There are lots of reason to switch to having VoIP at the workplace...if you want to know more, just click here.

Feuerameise

Sometimes on our way home, the kids would suddenly shout "Feuerameise" or fire ants, something they heard (and saw) from the movie Meet the Robinsons. I got curious about these insects so I looked up how they actually look. I am glad that they are different from what the kids thought to be fire ants because if they are then they could have been bitten! To think that fire ants are like bees in the sense that they release venom when stinging. I just hope that the kids won't meet a real fire ant on the way so that I won't need to apply what I read about treating fire ant bites. Fingers crossed! :)

Want some ice cream? Pick your flavor on your favorite cone but not the big one! Spring has suddenly jump up  few degrees higher so ice cream shops (or coffee-ice cream) are finally open. I thought the kids would ask for ice cream when we went out last Saturday. I was surprised that they chose to have a ride over a cone! I bet they just didn't notice the ice cream shop lol.

The Last of the Tulips

For this year, I mean. I was able to get a few more photos before Spring ends. So please enjoy.

The purple tulip always looks elegant and royal.

The combination of red and yellow surely makes this type, fire-y!

Of course, only the yellow tulips remain in abundance!

In Memory - Photo hunt

For today's post, I am borrowing one that I posted in my other blog.

mem2
27 Feb 09, Vienna, Austria

At the corner of Franz Josefs Kai 31 and Morzinplatz 4 is a memorial stone that reads (when translated in English):
-
"Here stood the House of Gestapo. To those who believed in Austria it was hell. To many it was the gates of death. It sank into ruins just like the 'Thousand Year Reich'. But Austria was resurrected and with it our dead, the immortal victims.”
-
This memorial stone was of no interest to me until now, even though where it stood is a small park with benches where my 3 kids and I feed the pigeons or rest after a long day's walk at the city center. I would take photos of the area but never the stone itself.
-
I learned that the spot was were Hotel Metropole (sometimes Metropol) supposedly stood, it served as the headquarters of the Gestapo (Geheimes Polizeiamt,German Secret Police Office) during the Second World War. It was the same hotel where Philippine National hero, Dr. Jose Rizal and Dr. Maximo Viola, the financier of Rizal's masterpiece Noli Me Tangere, stayed for 5 days. A bomb hit and damaged the hotel during the 2nd World war and was subsequently destroyed to eliminate memories of the prisoners' death.
-
During its heydays, Hotel Metropole was a very convenient and luxurious place to stay at, they served both Austrian and French cookery and has a scenic view of the Danube Canal to boast. The hotel was located at the far end of the Ringstrasse, a circular road surrounding the inner city and is also the standard route for fiakers (horse-drawn carriages) and trams. The Ring showcases the imperial Habsburg grandeur and the glory of the Austro-Hungarian Empire with the most notable buildings in the city, significant museums, delightful parks and landscapes with remarkable statues. Sigmund Freud reportedly enjoyed taking a daily recreational walk around this Ring, I wouldn't be surprised that in my 6 years stay here, the photographer in me had always enjoyed the classical beauty I often capture when I just idle and wander about there on foot.

Knowing Air system contractors

It's almost summer and it would be inevitable for our homes to take on the heat. Have you checked on your air system units lately? If not, then its time to do so. Having your them inspected by a contractor is a must. Fortunately our contract includes free check up of these installations every year.

There are of course contractors such as Quinlan HVAC, specializing in air conditioning systems, repair, maintenance, installation, heat pumps, and high efficiency systems. When looking for a contractor, get the best qualified for the job, the cheapest quote simply doesn't necessarily mean you are saving. Don't sacrifice quality over the value of your money.

Remember that you don’t need the cheapest bid, instead, you should choose the quote that provides you with the best system and service for your money. The heating and air conditioning equipment in your home or business is a long term investment and should always be treated with utmost attention. It would be catastrophic to go through winter or summer with your air system breaking down.

Commitment - SpeakOutFriday

Wifespeaks: Speak Friday

Going biblical today, marriage is a divine institution designed to form a permanent bond of union between man and woman as husband and wife . It is a standard set out by God, authorized and established long ago at the garden of  Eden, with God himself performing the first marriage as told in Genesis 2:22-24. Do you recall how the first woman was created? By using the man’s rib as a base, God made woman man’s closest fleshly relative on earth. Back then, marriage was the normal way of life among the Hebrews. There is no word for "bachelor" in the Hebrew Scriptures.

bible-and-ring

Commitment...the big word that sends shivers down the spine of (some?) men. Though once found and given, commitment could be likened to the mortar that binds the bricks of a sturdy house. Mortar is made from combining sand, cement, and water. Similarly, commitment is formed from a combination of such factors as duty, trust, and lifelong friendship. When a man and woman earn each other’s trust and work at becoming the best of friends, their commitment towards each other grows. Commitment requires hard work and self-sacrifice. It demands that one be willing to forgo his own preferences in order to please his mate.
----
I always viewed marriage as a public display of commitment. Sure, a man can promise his woman that he'd love her for the rest of his life...but marriage is that one line they crossed to let others know that they finally are each other's...exclusively.

But marriage is more than just a piece of paper, of gold rings, beautiful gowns and grand ensemble, of flowers and photographs and that wonderful feeling of excitement and bliss.

Eventually, problems would come, you cannot escape your own faults or those of your spouse. Do you have the willingness to forgive? That is essential otherwise your commitment would be in question. It would be wise to not let upsets make you abandon your commitment or forfeit everything that you have already invested in your marriage nor the distance you have already covered in your journey together. Only then can you say that you have formed a bond the Bible describes as being so close that it is as if the two people were “one flesh.”—Matthew 19:5.

How far would I go to honor my commitment? I leave you with this:

-----

Proverbs 31

10 A capable wife who can find? Her value is far more than that of corals.

11 In her the heart of her owner has put trust, and there is no gain lacking.

12 She has rewarded him with good, and not bad, all the days of her life.

13 She has sought wool and linen, and she works at whatever is the delight of her hands.

14 She has proved to be like the ships of a merchant. From far away she brings in her food.

15 She also gets up while it is still night, and gives food to her household and the prescribed portion to her young women.

16 She has considered a field and proceeded to obtain it; from the fruitage of her hands she has planted a vineyard.

17 She has girded her hips with strength, and she invigorates her arms.

18 She has sensed that her trading is good; her lamp does not go out at night.

19 Her hands she has thrust out to the distaff, and her own hands take hold of the spindle.

20 Her palm she has stretched out to the afflicted one, and her hands she has thrust out to the poor one.
